Pope, son of Illinois politician and judge Nathaniel Pope, was a West Point graduate and had an army career. After the Union army loss at 2nd Manassas (Bull Run) in August 1862, Pope was sent to Minnesota to put down the Sioux Indian uprising. He retired from the army in 1886.
